A psychologist supports the children, keyworkers  and residential staff team within Sprucewood.

From the point of referral the psychologist contributes to decision making in terms of suitability of a potential placement as a member of the referral panel, assessing the compatibility of the children proposed to be placed together in the home. Post admission the psychologist undertakes an initial assessment throughout the first six weeks of placement alongside other members of the multidisciplinary team and, in consultation with the placing social work team, agree the most suitable Intervention Plan to best support the child through their placement. Baseline psychometric measures are gathered to monitor and assess progression through the placement.

If deemed appropriate the psychologist can provide direct, evidence based intervention and psychological assessment of each child however often the most effective and powerful therapeutic support is achieved indirectly through the daily milieu and interaction with staff.  The psychologist plays a fundamental role in preparing, training, supporting and reflecting with the residential staff, both at team level and through individual case consultations, considering the impact of interpersonal interactions and occurrences in daily life and how to utilize these opportunities to support the child’s development and progression. Monthly intervention review forums are convened, where Sprucewood’s residential and multidisciplinary team, home management, placing social worker and any other relevant professionals or carers, (for example, carers from an identified onward placement) come together to review and contribute to each child’s Intervention Plan.
