Play Therapist

our services

Sprucewood engages a registered play therapist who is a member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to individual assessment and intervention for each child and training of staff.  Play therapy is an effective therapy that helps children modify their behaviours, clarify their self-concept and build healthy relationships. In play therapy children enter into a dynamic relationship with the therapist that enables them to express, explore and make sense of their difficult and painful experiences, increase resiliency and facilitate emotional literacy.

Children use play as a form of communication, it helps them express their feelings and emotions, in a symbolic way through the use of a variety of play materials, when they do not have the ability to express themselves verbally. Our play therapist offers each child a therapeutic environment in which the child can begin to feel safe enough to explore and in turn experience a sensitive, empathetic and non-judgemental response.  Our play therapist will also support the transitional process to the child’s onward placement, educating and coaching the parents/new carers in how best to use play to support their child.
