A registered art psychotherapist provides support to both the children and staff in Sprucewood.
Through the use of creative media, Art Therapy, a form of psychotherapy, facilitates primarily non-verbal self-expression and communication of difficult feelings and experiences in a safe, consistent and contained space.
It serves a particularly invaluable role in supporting traumatized children by utilizing a neuro-sequential approach, enhancing the integrative capacity of the brain.
The experience aids children develop emotional regulation and sensory modulation and in turn provides opportunities to develop a greater understanding of self and others. It promotes trust building through consistent engagement with the therapist, helps children build resilience and can boost confidence and self-esteem and encourages the development of new and safer coping mechanisms.
The art psychotherapist contributes to the initial decision making process at the point of referral as a member of the referral panel. On admission and throughout the initial six weeks of placement the art psychotherapist contributes to assessment as part of the multidisciplinary team. This assessment informs the direction of the Intervention Plan for each child. The art psychotherapist also contributes to ongoing monitoring and review of the child’s intervention plan through their attendance and contribution at the monthly intervention review forums.
